Our relationship with the world

An other perspective on relationships

Let’s reflect on relationships—what do they imply? Are we very conscious of our perception of them? Do we adopt a model we are taught? or do we create our own framework that fits us? As a result, do we cultivate relationships that also fit us? Here an other perspective on relationships.

Putting names on relations

We normally label relationships, such as ‘friends,’ ‘spouse,’ ‘family,’ ‘lovers,’ ‘friends with benefits’… each label comes with a tacit definition, a concept, and an idea we assumed but never questioned. Let’s have a look and maybe an other perspective on relationships.

We enter into a relationship (whatever the nature of the relation). Hence, we unconsciously expect some treatment, some behavior. We base that on how we label the relationship and on what we assume are the ‘ingredients’ that are part of the labeled relationship.

Involving ourselves in that type of relationship is like trying to fit into ready-to-wear clothes and expecting our body to change to adjust to the exact shape of the clothes without questioning if the clothing is tailored for us.

Communication is key

I feel we should start by questioning both things.
– Why do we have the necessity to label?
– What consequences does labeling have on the quality of our relationship, or how does it affect our relationship?

In our society, and for communication purposes, it is easier to put a name on a relationship. However, I strongly believe that cultivating a good relationship involves not making assumptions. In addition, having an open dialogue with the other person is a plus or a must. Both parties can genuinely discuss what to include in the relationship, what not to, what can evolve, and when to make changes.

In conclusion, cultivating good relationships helps having a positive experience in life. Some studies have shown that having strong relationships and experiencing love can improve the overall quality of life.
