You said “emotions” ?
One thing that particularly interests me is emotions. We always hear about them, but in recent years, the subject of emotions has taken on a completely different dimension. I wish to invite you to reflect on emotions, ours, yours. It’s an invitation to change your perspective on them, to see them as friends, and perhaps to appreciate them a little more.
When we look at the vocabulary of emotions, each culture and language have different and unique words to describe colors and nuances of infinite emotions. For example, there’s a Japanese word, ‘Nagori,’ to describe the nostalgia of returning from vacation, or ‘Resfeber’ in Swedish to describe the excitement that builds the night before a trip.
Until now, I only knew about emotions as something I experienced. Sometimes it’s stress, fear, joy, pride, excitement… it depends on the situations. There are, of course, emotions we enjoy feeling and seek, and then there are those we wish to avoid. But emotions are neither a drug nor something to run away from.
Since childhood, we’re educated in a vision of positive emotions that are good to experience. But we’re also educated in avoiding emotions with a negative connotation. We distract a crying baby to prevent them from feeling discomfort. We tell children not to cry, that it’s nothing. And then, as adults, we end up hiding from feeling anything other than joy, isolating ourselves, or denying our emotions.
Our emotions serve a purpose, and it’s important to learn and integrate that. Positive emotions stimulate us, while negative emotions protect us. They can help us move away from danger or assert our boundaries.
We need to change our relationship with emotions to better experience them. Learn to accept that happiness is temporary and not eternal, learn to feel anger or sadness peacefully. Emotions are a sign that we are alive!
I am convinced that once we accept all our emotions, welcome them, experience them… eventually, we will realize that some are not as terrible as we thought, and others are not as fantastic. When we finally learn to live with all emotions, we discover their beauty, and above all… we finally understand that they have the power to move us.
