Are we conscious of what we expose ourselves to?

All day long, we expose ourselves and our brains to a constant stream of stimuli. Our senses are constantly bombarded, and it has become an integral part of our daily life. We listen music, we have conversations with people, we have activities – leisure or work- we read, we watch tv, we see social medias…so all day long we are exposed to images, sound, content. The immersive nature of activities often allows us to temporarily escape reality. As we escape reality, it’s crucial to acknowledge the potential impact on our mental and emotional states. The thing we tend to ignore is how our brain takes all that things and maybe underestimate the effects on us.

Let’s say you watch TV. You could say what you are watching is fiction, your own discernment know it and can make the difference. However your brain somehow doesn’t make that difference. our emotions tend to respond viscerally to the on-screen events. A tense scene can trigger a stress response, a frightening moment can evoke fear, and a poignant narrative can bring about a deep sense of sadness. These emotional reactions, though transient, accumulate throughout the day, contributing to an overall emotional tone that we may not be fully conscious of.

A priori there is no harm in watching tv, but is it really true? Do we really measure the effects on our mood?

Similarly, music has also the ability to influence our emotions. The beats, rhythms, and lyrics can either uplift our spirits, create a calming ambiance, or induce stress. It generally depends on the genre and our personal associations with the music. This emotional resonance with auditory stimuli extends beyond our awareness, shaping our mood and psychological well-being.

I think we underestimate the effect of constant exposure to emotionally charged stimuli, and we ignore how it can significantly impact our emotional resilience or mental health.

Developing mindfulness around our media consumption habits allows us to make choices aligned with our well-being. It involves recognizing the emotional impact of the content we engage with and making conscious decisions about the type and amount of stimuli we expose ourselves to.

Striking a balance between moments of relaxation and activities that nourish our mental health can contribute to a more harmonious and fulfilling daily experience.

Understanding how our brains process and respond to the stimuli empowers us to curate an environment that fosters emotional well-being. It’s a call to be proactive in shaping our daily experiences, ensuring that the narratives we immerse ourselves in contribute positively to our mental and emotional resilience.
