In the outside world, we are called to fit, to correspond to a certain model… that’s the message we receive. Our parents wish for us to pursue a good career, and it’s well-regarded. People around us tell us we are too thin, too fat… we should be like this, behave like that, not do this or that. Throughout the day, we receive a lot of comments or “advice,” and naturally, we are inclined to listen and take actions to fit in.
Since we are born, we are told what to do. Initially, it is for our survival. As innocent beings unable to distinguish what’s dangerous and what’s not, we rely on the guidance of adults for our own well-being. We are naturally open to listening and integrating comments from the outside world.
As we grow, we continue to conform to societal expectations, listening to others’ comments, advice, and taking them personally. Not adhering to these directives may instill fear, a natural response. Thus, most of the time, we still follow what we are told, basing our decisions on others’ thoughts and opinions. We strive to fit in, making every effort to do so. Yet, despite our efforts, we often feel something is wrong, hearing a noise within us. We have dreams but may not pursue them or follow our inspiration.
But what if the entire purpose of fitting in were not to fit in? What if aligning with yourself made you feel happier, energized, and content, radiating a new aura to others? Eventually, you become so empowered that the outside world doesn’t even attempt to dictate what you should do. What if, without the noise of external opinions, we no longer heed the internal voice saying, “I wish I had done that”? Could that sensation of tranquility be the true meaning of “fitting in”?
I genuinely believe and have seen numerous examples of people who made the choice to follow their dreams and instincts. They decided not to heed external directives and, in doing so, transformed themselves into examples or inspiring individuals.
