Being a perfectionist isn’t about being perfect, being high level; perfectionist personés are not necessarily more efficient than none perfectionist people. Actually I think being perfectionist is more like a handicap than an advantage. Let’s talk about why.
In the journey of life, there are moments when we desire change — whether it’s altering certain habits, transforming our physical appearance, or adjusting our behavior. We may aspire to quit smoking, consume less alcohol, or engage in regular gym sessions. One day, motivated by a newfound determination, we wake up and commit to a new rule: perhaps daily gym visits or resisting the temptation of a piece of cake. Initially, we feel a sense of accomplishment, but as time passes, adhering to the new resolution becomes increasingly challenging. While some manage to sustain the change, more often than not, we find ourselves reverting to the familiar and comfortable —our old habits.
around us. We have been deceived because we were convinced that the shared relationship involved certain aspects or ingredients, and suddenly realized it was not the way we thought. So, we get deceived sometimes by the person, considering that he/she should not have behaved in a certain way, and at some point, I guess we can feel betrayed. But did we really agree on something, on terms and conditions, or did we just assume it was like that and expected the other person would also feel, think, and live the situation the exact same way?
In the outside world, we are called to fit, to correspond to a certain model… that’s the message we receive. Our parents wish for us to pursue a good career, and it’s well-regarded. People around us tell us we are too thin, too fat… we should be like this, behave like that, not do this or that. Throughout the day, we receive a lot of comments or “advice,” and naturally, we are inclined to listen and take actions to fit in.
Work is often very demanding, with many tasks and not enough time to complete them. The pressure, numerous responsibilities, and the need to keep many things in mind can lead to stress, anxiety, and exhaustion. One of the best tools I know to avoid stress and anxiety caused by an infinite to-do list is planning and using a calendar.
Life is about trial and error. By trying, we learn, and by failing, we learn. In my approach to socializing with people, I have tried many things—combinations of behaviors and responses to different situations. So, there are two rules I would say I apply when it comes to establishing and maintaining relationships with people.
Let’s reflect on relationships—what do they imply? Are we very conscious of our perception of them? Do we adopt a model we are taught, or do we create our own framework that fits us? As a result, do we cultivate relationships that also fit us? Here a reflection n relationships.
